  • That's a tablet guide, no HoloLens needed! 😉

    0.1 Please use the same assembly as you used for the Parts 1-3 or a new assembly, but make sure that it's a simple one.

    We will kindly ask you to refrain from using complex assemblies and stick to the simple ones, such as a column or a beam. You can see the examples above:

  • Welcome to your FabStation tablet guide! Here is your learning plan for today:

    Step 1: Open the FabStation App and find an assembly

    Step 2: Adjust the Hologram Orientation and Place the QR code

    Step 3: Mapping the area

    Step 4: Align an assembly

  • Step 1: Open the FabStation App and find an assembly

    To start aligning an assembly, you need to navigate to assembly using the tablet.

  • 1.1 Login to FabStation App using Tablet.

    - Your username should populate automatically, please choose it from the drop-down.

    - Use the password you have been provided.

    NOTE: If you are taken back to the login screen after clicking on Login, please click on it again.

  • 1.2 Select either Fabricate, Inspect (if you use status system) or View from the Home screen.

    If you are not sure or don't use status system, please select View.

    1.3 Choose the project and locate your assembly

  • 1.4 Once you selected an assembly, click on Fab-Assist or QC-Assist:

  • Step 2: Place and Scan QR target

    2.1 Place artificial feature magnets every ~ 3'-0 throughout the assembly.

  • You should receive the magnets along with the QR code target. The magnets will look like this:

  • 2.2 Place and scan the QR target

  • You need to draw a centerline on the material you are working on and place the QR target on the edge of the material with crosshairs aligned to the centerline.

    There are 2 positions of the QR code on the assembly (ᐱ or ᐯ), while you can work from any side of it:

  • You can choose any of those positions, whichever is comfortable for you, following these 2 rules:

    - Always put a QR target in a horizontal position, it should always be on the top of the assembly.

    It's fine if the model within the FabStation is rotated incorrectly - you can rotate it to match the assembly while aligning.

    - The Yellow arrow ᐱ or ᐯ should be placed exactly as pictured above, depending on your position.

  • 2.3 Match the Tablet View (Hologram Orientation) with the Assembly on the Shop Floor

    After selecting Fab-Assist and choosing a HoloLens, the Part Selector screen appears. Follow these steps to make sure that the tablet view matches the assembly orientation on the shop floor:

    a. Part Selector: The part of the assembly in blue on the tablet is where the QR code will be loaded. To load the QR code onto a different part of the assembly, tap that part; it will turn blue.

  • b.The tablet always displays the top view of the assembly (birds eye view).

    Use the three controls at the bottom of the tablet screen to rotate the assembly within the tablet view. Rotate the assembly to match the top view of the assembly on the shop floor.

  • For example, if the web is facing up (towards the ceiling) in this view, the hologram will appear with the web facing up.

  • c. Match the left side of the tablet view to the edge of the assembly you are standing at. The tablet always loads the QR code onto the left side in the tablet, so it’s important to rotate the assembly based on your standing position.

  • d. Tap Confirm in the top right corner once the tablet orientation matches the assembly on the shop floor.

  • 2.4 Check the QR Placement Inside the Tablet

    Next, the prompt "Would you like to move the QR target position" appears.

    Tap Yes to check the exact placement of the QR.

    • Tap on the magnifying icon to zoom into the QR marker placement.
    • Use the joystick to make micro-adjustments to the QR code. Match the tablet view to look exactly the same as how the QR code is placed on the assembly.
    • Keep the QR code close to the edge of the assembly

  • Once the adjustments are complete, tap Confirm in the top right corner and then scan the QR code.

  • 2.5 Scanning/pre-alignment issues

    There are some issues that can appear if the QR-code is scanned incorrectly. There is an easy fix for all of them, so please go through all the cases below and check how you can fix the 3D model:

  • Check QR code position toward the assembly (Step 2.2). Then position the QR properly and click on Tools > Recalibrate.

  • If the model appeared vertical or perpendicular to the assembly, first check that the QR Target is orientated correctly. If it is then click on Tools > Fix orientation:

  • If the model is out of place, click on Tools > Recalibrate.

  • Model appears rotated or flipeed end to end. If this is the case then click on Controls and rotate it to the position you need.

  • Step 3: Mapping the area

  • 3.1 Start mapping

    Once you scanned the QR target, there will be a prompt to map the area.

    IMPORTANT: Do not leave the area of the QR target before you click on the Mapping button. If you want to move away from target, you have to start mapping the area first.

  • 3.2 Mapping area

    Your mapping area should be only 3 sides of the assembly - there is no need, nor it's efficient to map the whole assembly. Here are the examples of your working/mapping area:

  • While mapping the area, the camera is looking for the unique features of the area to mark and remember them.

    It captures the initial data, so the system will remember its environment when you walk around - that's also the reason why you needed to put AF magnets before.

    3.3 Finish mapping

    Once mapping is done, click on "Finish":

  • And now it's time to actually align an assembly 👉

  • Step 4: Aligning an assembly

  • The alignment is done with the tablet controls. This is what you will see on the screen:

  • There are certain rules that you need to follow while aligning an assembly.

    4.1 If needed, rotate a 3D model of the assembly to match the real one using Center controls.

    4.2 Always start with the side where you placed a QR code, and use Right-hand Controls for this.

  • 4.3 After the side with the QR code is done, go to the opposite side and fix it using Left-hand controls.

  • 4.4 Last adjustments.

    While working with the assembly, please remember that you are working with the perfect model within the FabStation and imperfect material.

    IMPORTANT: it's fine if there is a small discrepancy in some places between the model and the material, but even this discrepancy should be no more than ±2-3 mm.

  • While aligning the model, you need to do the first alignment and then do another round to make sure that everything is correct.

    Here are two examples that correspond to the A and B positions from the Step 2.2:

    • You always start with 1 and continue as per the numbers sequence.
    • In 1,3 you will be using right-hand controls, and with 2,4 - left hand.

    While small imperfections (±4-5 mm discrepancy in some places) are fine, you need to look attentively for missing details or other deviations from the model as the tool is made to find the mistakes that can easily skip the eye.

    Alignment shouldn't take much of your time. Very first alignment can take up to 10 minutes, but master with simple objects is that you can do it within 2 minutes or less.

    • Place a QR target exactly as per the image within the Step 2.2;
    • Do not move away from the QR target/code until you start mapping the area;
    • Map only one side of the area where you will be working;
    • Expected time to align an assembly: 2 minutes. It means that you mastered it;
    • Start with QR code side - right-hand controls. Opposite side - left hand;
